Steve Withington is an exceptional artist, utterly determined to avoid getting a proper job at all costs. Brought up by strict disciplinarians, he finally completed an escape tunnel aged 16. Once free he started work in a mobile Chinese takeaway (the Flying Rice Bowl, Leytonstone High Road). Eventually, Steve went north and settled in Sheffield, where he honed his skills as an artist, and showed his work for many years in impromptu outside exhibitions.
Steve has five children, one fridge and a complicated life. He is a founding member of the Deedahist Movement and the Anarchosimian Brotherhood.
Steve Withington is an outstanding artist of our generation. His encapsulation of the simian condition is an epic work in itself. I feel privileged to have been influenced by such a colossus of the art world.
